UNDERSTAND YOUR MATERIALS

01What Is Multiwall Polycarbonate?

Multiwall polycarbonate is a polycarbonate sheet with connecting walls that form internal air chambers. Twinwall ranges typically have two flat faces and parallel longitudinal ribs; multiwall ranges have additional layers and ribs.

  • 1Two Sheet Faces: allow light through and create a continuous appearance.
  • 2Longitudinal Connecting Ribs: join the layers and define the chambers and sheet structure.
  • 3Air Chambers: reduce weight and create an insulating air layer within the multiwall structure.

Lightweight and Easy to Transport

Internal chambers reduce the amount of material in the sheet, making roof handling and fabrication more convenient.

Natural Daylighting

Choose colour and light transmission to bring suitable daylight into the space.

Insulating Air Chambers

The multiwall structure creates an air layer; assess specific performance using each sheet's U-value.

Flexible Design

For roofs and daylighting walls; bending and fixing must follow each range's documentation.

COMPARISON TOOL

What Does kg/Sheet Equal in kg/m²?

Enter net weight and sheet dimensions. Calculation: weight ÷ (width × length).

1.11 kg/m²Sheet Area: 12.18 m²

Default values are calculation examples only, not specifications for a LIONVINA product.

Sheets of the Same Thickness Can Still Differ. Ribs, walls, material grade and protective layers all require comparison. Weight helps compare material quantity; load-bearing selection needs separate technical documentation.

LIGHT & APPEARANCE

04Colours for Every Space

Colours vary by thickness: 4 mm is available in clear and blue/green; 4.5 mm in clear, lake blue, green and bronze; 5 mm in clear, blue/green and bronze.

UV Protective Layer

Helps protect the sheet against weathering. During installation, check the UV side marked on the film and in the documentation.

Solar Heat Control

Assess separate specifications such as SHGC/g-value and ventilation design; a dark colour or UV layer alone does not establish that a roof will stay cool.

05Bring Daylight into Your Project

Select materials according to intended use while considering supports, fixings and conditions at the installation site.

DETAILS THAT DETERMINE DURABILITY

06Correct Orientation, Correct End Sealing

Principles only. Slope, spans, expansion gaps and fixings must follow the documentation for the chosen sheets and accessory system.

01

Orient Sheets Correctly

Chambers run along the roof slope; for walls, position chambers vertically so condensation can drain.

02

Identifying the UV-Protected Side

Read the protective-film markings and face the UV-protected side towards the sun. Check two-sided protection ranges separately.

03

Allow for Thermal Expansion

Installation gaps and drilled holes must follow the instructions for the sheets, profiles and screws. Avoid rigid overtightening that can compress, bend or crack sheets.

04

Finish Chamber Ends

Replace transport tape with suitable sheet end tape. Seal the upper end; use ventilating tape and a protective profile with drainage at the lower end.

05

Select the Correct Accessories

H joining profiles, U end profiles, gaskets and sealants must suit polycarbonate. Check slope, drainage and frame fixings.

06

Inspection & Handover

Remove film after installation and check gaps and sheet ends. Do not walk directly on polycarbonate roofing; use a frame-supported working platform during installation.

Cleaning & Storage

Wash gently with warm water and mild soap using a soft cloth, then rinse clean. Avoid abrasives, acetone, petrol and incompatible cleaners; do not clean when the surface is too hot. LEXAN Cleaning Guide 2025 ↗

ADVICE BEFORE YOU BUY

07Frequently Asked Questions

How Does Multiwall Polycarbonate Differ from Solid Polycarbonate?

Multiwall polycarbonate has air chambers and visible ribs, making it suitable when weight and insulating structure are priorities. Solid polycarbonate is a solid sheet suited to clear, rib-free surfaces. The final selection must match the sheet model to project requirements.

Does a 6 mm Sheet Always Weigh 13.5 kg?

No. Weight depends on size, structure and the amount of resin per m². When requesting a 6 mm sheet, also confirm the brand, dimensions, kg/sheet or kg/m² and UV side. One weight figure alone is not enough to identify a product.

Should I Choose 4 mm, 4.5 mm or 5 mm?

Start with roof dimensions, frame spacing and project location, then check the exact sheet model and manufacturer's load tables. Send drawings or dimensions to LIONVINA for advice on the sheet–frame–accessory combination.

Will Multiwall Polycarbonate Keep a Space Completely Cool?

Air chambers support thermal insulation, but sunlight can still heat the space. Consider light transmission, solar heat control, sun direction and ventilation. The UV layer protects the sheet against weathering; heat reduction needs separate performance data.

Why Is There Dust or Algae Inside the Chambers?

Open chamber ends, unsuitable tape or blocked moisture outlets can allow dust and moisture to accumulate. Check sheet ends, tape, profiles and chamber direction before installation; exterior cleaning cannot remove dirt inside the chambers.

Can the Sheet Be Curved?

Some ranges can be cold-curved along the chamber direction. Check the minimum radius for the exact model; avoid forcing a guessed curve or bending across the ribs. Exolon Guide ↗

How Are Prices and Warranty Periods Confirmed?

Quotations depend on brand, thickness, structure, size, colour, quantity, cutting, accessories and delivery area. Warranty period and conditions are confirmed for each product code in the quotation.

Technical Reference Documents

The documents below explain multiwall polycarbonate principles. Each brand's specifications and warranty apply only to its own ranges; check the product documentation in the LIONVINA quotation.
